Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
Arithmetic word problems. Learn a practical way to study this area and try an original ASVAB-style example.
What to focus on
Translate words into a clean mathematical setup before calculating. Practice rates, percentages, ratios, proportions, averages and multi-step problems.
Worked example
Example: A car travels 180 miles in 3 hours. Rate = 180 ÷ 3 = 60 mph. In 5 hours: 60 × 5 = 300 miles.

Write down what the question is asking for before you start calculating.
How to practice
- Start untimed and prioritize accuracy.
- Review every miss and label the reason: concept, reading, formula, setup or rushing.
- Repeat the underlying skill with a different problem.
- Add time pressure only after the method feels reliable.
